Green gram/green lentil / pacha payaru puttu is a healthy breakfast or snack recipe which is steam cooked and served along with coconut and jaggery. This puttu recipe is a very good snack for girls who are in puberty stage and also for women's. Here, we are going to do it in two ways, one with sugar and other one with jaggery powder.
Ingredients: Serves 4 to 5
- 1 cup - Green lentils/ green gram/pacha payaru
- 1/2 cup - Coconut grated
- 1/4 tsp - Cardamom powder
- 2 to 3 tsp of ghee
- Sugar as needed
- Jaggery powder/ Naatu Sakkarai as needed
- Salt to taste
- Wash and soak green gram/ lentil for 6 hours or over night. Grind it in a blender along with salt and just enough water to grind to a slightly thick batter like idli batter (refer the video for the consistency).
- Apply some oil over the idli platter, pour the prepared dal batter like idli and then steam it for 15 mins or until well cooked.
- Allow them to cool completely and remove from idli platter. Crush them with your hands into bits and pieces.
- Transfer them to a blender and pulse it once or twice to a crumbly texture. Take a mixing bowl, add half of the crumbly lentil/puttu, coconut grated, sugar, cardamom powder and the ghee, mix well and serve.
- Take the other half of puttu in another bowl, add the rest of the grated coconut , jaggery powder, cardamom powder, and finally ghee, mix well and serve.
- Sugar or jaggery is up to your choice. Both tastes good in it own way.
- Make sure that lentil idlies are completely cooled down before pulsing it. If the lentil idli is warm while pulsing then it will stick together that spoils the basic texture of puttu(crumbly).
