Vazhakkai kootu is a tasty and yummy side dish for rice, which also needs very few ingredients and less time to prepare. My mom always prepares this kootu and serves it along with hot rice and a tsp of sesame oil on top, Its mouth watering every time she serves this kootu. Also, this kootu does not use any coconut and any other fancy spices in it.

- 3 no’s – Vazhakkai / Raw banana / Plantains
- 1/4 cup – Bengal gram / Chana dal / Kadalai paruppu
- 1 no – Onion (chopped finely)
- 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp – Red chilli powder (or add as needed)
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp – Oil (preferably sesame oil)
- 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds
- 1/4 tsp – Split black gram / Ulunthu / Urad dal
- 2 to 3 no’s – Dry red chilies
- 5 to 6 no’s – Fresh curry leaves
- Pinches of asafoetida
- Wash and soak bengal gram / Kadalai paruppu in enough water for an hour and set it aside.
- Cut raw banana into a slightly big cubes and set it aside.
- Take a pressure cooker, add in raw banana cubes, soaked bengal gram, chopped onion, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and enough salt and water (approximately 1 cup). Cook for a whistle and switch off the stove.
- Finally season it with the items given in the list for seasonings. Check for salt, if needed add more at this stage. Serve with hot rice.
Notes:
- Do not add more water while cooking raw banana mixture. Just add enough water that covers the mixture.
- Also do not over cook the kootu as it will affect the texture and taste of the dish.
- You may increase or decrease the amount of red chili powder as per your spice level.
