Milagai chutney is a popular chutney in the Southern part of Tamilnadu. Very simple chutney with tickling taste, best side dish for idli and dosai.

- 2 nos – Onion (medium size)
- 2 nos – Tomato (medium size)
- 2 to 3 nos – Dry red chillies ( or add as needed)
- Salt to taste
- 1tbsp – Sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds
- 1/4 tsp – Split black gram / Ulunthu
- Few fresh curry leaves
- 2 pinches – Asafoetida
Preparation method:
- Wash and cut tomatoes and onion into cubes as shown in the picture. Set it aside.
- Heat oil in a pan, add chopped onions and tomatoes, saute for few minutes or until translucent (no need to saute it for long time). Switch off the stove and allow them to cool completely.
- Transfer sauteed onion and tomato mixture to a blender along with dry red chillies and required salt. Grind them to a slightly coarse paste and keep it aside.
- Heat sesame oil in a pan, season with items given in the list for seasoning. Followed by ground onion tomato mixture, saute for few minutes (no need to saute it until oil separates) and switch off the stove. Milagai chutney is ready to serve.
Notes:
- You may increase or decrease number of dry red chillies as per your spice level.
Nice spicy chutney, we add some coconut to it, goes well with kal dosai!
